Rebounds

This illustrates the value of following in on goal. The centre plays the ball out to the left wing, whose shot is saved by the goal minder. The centre knocks in the rebound before the goal minder can recover.

Defending 2 on 1

Click to view 2 on 1 animation (139KB)Notice in this play that the defender first moves between the oncoming forwards, preventing the cross court pass. The goal minder moves to cover the shot from the player with the ball. As the forwards close on goal the defender keeps between the two attackers, while trying to angle the ball carrier towards the boards without committing himself. Notice that as the play ends the forwards have not been able to complete a pass and the ball carrier is at an impossible angle for a shot.

It is very important for the defender to stay aware of the forward who is heading for the goal and keeps the angle for the pass covered. If the spare forward stops or pulls back slightly, the defender must keep the angle for the pass blocked, even if that means that the ball carrier has an sight of goal. Trust the goal minder to cover the direct shot in this case.

Drop Pass

Click to view drop-pass animation (132 KB)Watch the way the green team's players cross over and the defender follows the player who has left the ball for his team-mate. This allows a clear shot on goal. Sadly, the keeper has followed the play and knocks the shot away.

Still, remember what we said about following in?
